On December 17, 2021, Avinor ANS signed a contract with Edda Systems AS on delivery of an ATC Tower Simulator for Remote Towers. Just after summer holidays, on August 11, 2022, the delivery was approved as successfully completed, including three Remote Tower operator working positions.

The eCoach Simulator accurately emulates the operational Remote Towers solution currently in use in Bodø, Norway, for 15 airports in the first delivery. The simulator includes multi-mode operation, where a single operator is responsible for up to three airports at the same time using the same working position. A switching mechanism allows operational working positions in the contingency center to be used for training purposes.

Simulator pilot working positions were installed both locally in Bodø, and remotely at Værnes, 460 km away.

The system is based on Edda Systems cloud simulation technology, enabling remote operations to/from any location with internet-connection. The simulator thus enables remote piloting and training – giving organizations the ability to provide remote training concepts for delivering and executing their training services.

This reduces the need for travel, enables Covid/pandemic mitigation, and ensures optimal use of an organization’s personnel resources - as the training activities - students and instructors, can be located at different sites - still in one virtual training center - giving all participants the experience of being co-located.

“The eCoach procurement ensures a modern simulation capacity in the Bodø Remote Tower Centre, including simultaneous operations across multiple airports from the same working position”, says Mr. Jan Østby, Avinor’s manager for the Remote Towers program. “It is an important piece in achieving the effects of our Remote Towers investments.”
